Burkifornia ’16 – Day 6
This morning we were up early and running to the Sandia Peak Tramway for a ride up and down and a stay at the peak long enough to take in the incredible view! It was a little chilly at the top – something we forgot to plan for. We were back at the hotel by 11:00 AM to pick up our fuzzy friend and get on the road to our next stop. Our original plan had us heading to Flagstaff, AZ, but about 30 minutes into the trip we decided to just go to Holbrook, AZ. That would allow us more time for stops without keeping us on the road too long.
The ride to the Arizona border took about two hours because we kept stopping along the way to see things and take photos. We stopped at Chief Yellow Horse’s place to look around. It straddles the NM/AZ state lines. There were lots of old things to see, from cars to rocks. The cave formations on the property were spectacular and our dog made friends with a goat and a pigmy horse. The sheep wasn’t having any of that, he just ran.
Along the route today we got great pics of old cars and buildings. I would’ve loved to have gone into one of the buildings, but it was on private property. I wanted to stop for a Laguna Burger, but it was too early and we weren’t really hungry. Once in AZ, we decided to check out the Petrified Forest National Park. It was an incredible 28 mile drive through open land and unbelievable formations and colors.
Once we reached Holbrook, we dropped our stuff at the hotel and went looking for the Wigwam Motel. That was where we wanted to stay. It only has 14 rooms and was booked up. We took some cool pics and hope to have the opportunity to stay there in the future. Dairy Queen was dinner and dessert and now we’re planning for tomorrow’s excursion off Route 66 to the Grand Canyon!
