Burkifornia – Day 3 – SemDIVE!

Burkifornia ’16 – Day 3

StartingOut

Day 3 turned out to be another long day of driving. Who knew Missouri was such a long state! We got a late start, but followed Route 66 out of St. Clair, MO, through a small section of Kansas, and finally into Oklahoma! Today our technology worked for us – at least part of the way. There’s no point in digital mapping when you can’t get a cellular signal. Ah, all in good fun. If we wanted high tech, we’d stay on the interstate and only book rooms at Holiday Inn Express – so we’d get smarter each night!

The Oklahoma portion of the drive paralleled to I-44, occasionally crossing from one side to the other. We were disappointed about not being able to visit Meramec Caverns as they were closed. We drove past old towns, lots of old KS-66classic cars, farms that went on for miles, through modern towns, and up and down rolling roads. The views were nothing short of spectacular. One of the highlights was a stop at the Fanning Outpost in Cuba, OK. The store was filled with Route 66 memorabilia and friendly staff. Yes, we did walk out with our share of stickers, magnets, signs, and the like!
After driving through the town of Joplin, MO, we followed the Route 66 sign off of the main road and were sure we took a wrong turn as we drove down a tiny little road. Almost ready to turn around, we saw it up ahead… shining like gold… The Route 66 – Kansas sign. We got a quick photo and continued on. No wonder we couldn’t find any lodging accommodations in KS, there’s nothing in that section of the state. Part looked like there used to be something… Then, as we followed the Route 66 sign around a corner to the left, we entered Baxter Springs, KS. Wouldn’t you know it, we were in Radiator Springs, and there was Mater, Red and one of their friends. This part of KS was abandoned, but pristine – left to look like the old forgotten town after the interstate came through. As we drove on, the road became a little more modern and looked like a neat little town. We passed on through until we found the Oklahoma border, found our way to the Route 66 Motel, and here we are for the night.OK-66

Let’s see what tomorrow brings… we’re heading out to at least Oklahoma City, but may try to make it to
Amarillo, TX
