A Movie Premier in December
It may be February, but I want to tell you what we did one evening in December and what it will mean for you… soon! Our friends at Patriots for Disabled Divers hosted a movie premier at a cozy little wine bar called Bottle Stop in Occoquan, VA. We were with a group of about forty divers and dive professionals; a group of men and women with an extraordinary love for the ocean, and a true appreciation for it’s healing powers.
Wait, a movie premier… Really, you may think? What’s that about? Well, let me tell you!
Patriots for Disabled Divers (PFDD) is a not for profit organization founded in 2013 by Jeff Currer, a retired US Navy Captain, to bring the joy and therapeutic benefits of scuba to persons with disabilities. PFDD introduces scuba to people with disabilities ranging from PTSD through quadriplegia. But, what does THAT have to do with a movie premier?
On December 13th, PFDD hosted a private screening of an excellent film that we recommend you watch as soon as it’s released. It’s a documentary entitled Sixty Feet of Freedom. The film follows three veterans with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as they face their fears and work to become certified divers. They received their training through PFDD and then, through the generosity of Diving With Heroes® were given the opportunity to complete their open water dives on the beautiful island of Petit Saint Vincent in Caribbean. Hear from the warriors themselves about how the ocean and scuba provided them with challenge, adventure, and a world where the stress of the PTSD could be put aside for a while.
Overall, it was an awesome evening spent with amazing people, in a cozy place, for a worthy cause. We highly recommend you watch this short documentary film when it’s released in the next few weeks. If you haven’t already clicked on the link above to watch the trailer, here here it is again: Sixty Feet of Freedom.
We at Semper DIVE!® are proud to say we know Jeff and Merial Currer, owners of Patriot Scuba, and we support them in their work with Patriots for Disabled Divers®.
